It was introduced into Constantinople from the Mama, at a time when it was in general use, not only in Asiatic countries, but also in Barbary. 11 was stated to Dr. Russel, who resided long in Aleppo, that at Bagdad and Bassora, when the small-pox appeared in any dis triet of these cities, it was the custom to give notice by a public crier, in order that those who were so inclined might take the opportunity to have their children inoculated.
