Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Eight Annual Report of the State Board of Health, of the State of Rhode Island: For the Year Ending December 31, 1905; And Including the Report Upon the Registration of Births, Marriages, and Deaths in 1904 The work of the State Board of Health during the year has been a continuation of the study of the various conditions pertaining to the public health of the State, utilizing the various improved methods of investigation; and the examination of physicians desiring certificates authorizing them to practice medicine and surgery in the State. A more extended report of the different lines of work will be found in the latter part of this report, the first part of the report merely covering what may be termed a summary of the work. Contagious Diseases. During the year the monthly reports of the health officers of the several towns were received giving the number of cases of contagious diseases occurring in each city and town. The only diseases which are reportable by physicians are scarlet fever, diphtheria, and typhoid fever. Some few report the prevalence of measles and whooping cough. During some years there appears an unusual prevalence of one or more of these communicable diseases. Last year there was an unusual prevalence of scarlet fever, but the number of cases for this year was nearly the average amount. Measles was quite prevalent throughout the State this year and a considerable number of the cases were outside of the City of Providence. Typhoid fever and diphtheria were reported as being about the average in amount. Water Supplies.
