Book excerpt: A major concern related to the use of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavements (RAP) in hot mix asphalt is the quality and durability of the pavement layers constructed with this material. The AASHTO Quality Assurance Guide Specification uses the variability of the materials and construction processes to evaluate the overall final quality of transportation infrastructure projects. Besides, the literature and field experience about pavement structures had strengthen the idea the use of homogeneous and isotropic materials, are an indicator of more reliable structures. Within this context, this study evaluates the variability of the composition of RAP materials obtained from different sources, including their gradation, their asphalt content and the linear viscoelastic properties of the recovered asphalts. Furthermore, this work also assesses the impact the variability among RAP materials on the mechanical properties and performance of a 100% RAP hot asphalt mixture (RAP-HMA) evaluated at a meso-scale (i.e viscoelastic properties and fatigue degradation)...
