Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robot vision systems have undergone rapid evolution over the past several years. Several review articles have recently appeared which discuss various aspects of robot vision including industrial needs and applications (1), (2), model-based image analysis (3), and image understanding (4). These serve as a useful introduction to the robot vision area, and are recommended to the reader. The vision problem, however, is an extremely complex one, and much research and development work remains to be done. The BDM Corporation has overviewed the state-of-the-art of robot vision with emphasis on identification of generic problems and research and development needs. In this paper we review the results of this short study and discuss a pervasive problem in the robot vision area--high speed data processing.
