Throughout the year, he continues to write letters to his former friend (Caleb), who moved across the country before high school. Shortly following the start of the year, he decides to ask a girl (Laura) to Homecoming. She introduces him to her own friend group. At the same time, while attending the hospital frequently, he meets an eleven-year-old boy (Noah) who also has cancer, and they become best friends. Tom continuously battles with the cancer and ponders philosophically about life and death, slowly experiencing making friends, facing death, making amends, and finding love.
