Riemer of Bucknell College. But the idea of writing a dissertation on this subject was not fully decided upon until after I had written a seminar paper on Shaftesbury's relation to German thought in the 18th century, the seminar being conducted by Professor Calvin Thomas of Columbia University. I owe an unpayable debt to Professor Thomas for his encouragement and assistance in the preparation of this study and for excellent training in German scholarship.
