Such systems consist of two or more crews following one another in a fixed sequence with each crew completing a particular task on a unit being constructed, reparied or serviced. In systems where crew service times are variable, the flow of units through the system is irregular, thus causing some crew idle time and delays of some units being processed while they are waiting for the next crew. When the system is full, i.e., the limit on the number of units allowed in the system is reached, the first crew is prevented from bringing a new units into the system; hence, the production rate of the system is reduced below that of the slowest crew in the system. A dynamic control policy for selecting the service rates is sought that minimizes the long run expected average cost. (Author).
